Died two-time Olympic medalist Andrey Smirnov
The double prize-winner of the Olympic games 1976 in Montreal swimmer Andrey Smirnov died on 63 th year of life. About it reports the official website of the Russian swimming Federation.
In Canada, Smirnov won the silver medal in the relay 4×200 m freestyle in the national team of the USSR. He also won bronze in the men’s 400 m individual medley, losing to the Americans Alexander McKee and Rodney Strachen.
At the world championship in 1977 Smirnov won two medals — silver in the men’s 400 m individual medley and bronze in the 200m with it. Also in the asset of the athlete, three awards of the European Championships.
Since 2007, Smirnov worked as a Deputy Director of Sports school of the Olympic reserve of Kirovsky district of St. Petersburg. He presided over the opening of pools and the development of swimming in school.
